The history of the Department of Building Engineering is connected with the beginning of the creation of the Faculty - i.e. to the 1st June 1967. At that time, the Section of Building Engineering and Building Materials was founded as a part of newly established Faculty of Communal Engineering.
The main organizer of the Section of Building Engineering and Building Materials and at the same time the first head was Andrzej Lech Zdzienicki. The first academic teachers of the Section were Leon Sądej and Stanisław Majka.

- In 1968, the Faculty was renamed the Faculty of Civil and Municipal Engineering, and the Section of Building Engineering and Building Materials functioned within its structure until 1973. Didactic classes are conducted, laboratories are organized and equipped.

In 1973, the Faculty was transformed into the Institute of Building and Environmental Engineering, and the Section of Building Engineering and Building Materials changed its name to Department of Building Engineering.
At that time, the Department is carrying out a lot of research and development works for the construction industry. Many solutions developed by the employees of the Department and its Head are awarded by the Rector and the Minister of Building Engineering.
In the years 1975 -1978, Dr. eng. arch. Andrzej Lech Zdzienicki works as a contract associate professor.
Dr. eng. arch. Andrzej Lech Zdzienicki was also the Vice-Dean of the Faculty.
During another reorganization, which took place in 1977, the name of Department of Building Engineering was changed to Department of Building.
The next reorganization at the Faculty, carried out in 1979, resulted in the merger of the Department of Building with the Department of Technology and Building Organization. The Department of Technology and Building Organization is established, headed by Dr. arch. Andrzej Lech Zdzienicki.

In 1981, the Institute was transformed into the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering. All functioning organizational units remain within the structure of the Faculty.
In 1983, after retirement Dr. arch. Andrzej L. Zdzienicki, the new head of the Department was Dr. Eng. arch. Jan Chałupski, later professor of the Rzeszów University of Technology. In 1985, the reorganization takes place again - the Department of Building Engineering was separated from the Department of Technology and Building Organization, the head of the Department of Building Engineering remains Dr eng. arch. Jan Chałupski.
Not only are the existing research works continued, but also a new issue concerning the use of solar radiation energy in construction. The precursor of these considerations is MSc. Jan Kośny, who is later joined by MSc. Aleksander Starakiewicz and MSc. Lech Lichołai. At that time, the first laboratory models of collector and accumulation walls were created. These issues are developing dynamically and are continued in the following years.
In the years 1986-90, the Department conducts research within the framework of the Central Program of Fundamental Research " ENERGYHOUSE" (in poL "ENERGOBUDYNEK"), implementing the topic "Testing the effectiveness of collector-accumulative partitions and air collectors".

The results of the research are doctoral dissertations of three young scientists at that time: Jan Kośny, Lech Lichołai, and Aleksander Starakiewicz.
In 1991, another reorganization of Department of Building Engineering took place. The Department of Urban Planning and Architecture with the head of prof. assoc. dr hab. eng. arch. Jan Chałupski, while the head of the Department of Building Engineering is prof. assoc. hab. eng. Leszek Faryniak.

In September 1996, MSc Leon Sądej died - a man of great knowledge, very liked by students, kind to his colleagues, long-term academic teacher, actively teaching and at the disposal of students until the last days of his life. He spent a lot of time in the faculty reading room - a lot of people remember the figure of MSc Leon Sądej reading and browsing various scientific and engineering magazines, newspapers ... in the reading room in the H building.

In 2000 professor Leszek Faryniak retired. The head of the Department becomes prof. Lech Lichołai, who in the years 1996-2002 was the Vice-Dean of the Faculty.

The employees of the Department: Lech Lichołai and Aleksander Starakiewicz are appointed members of the Building Physics Section of the Civil and Water Engineering Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The Department of Building Engineering has had external research chambers since 2015 to conduct scientific research on the functioning of passive solar heating systems.
The Department organizes Scientific Conferences related to the broadly understood issues of sustainable construction, modern material and technological solutions in architecture, construction, engineering and environmental protection. An important topic of the Conference are issues related to the use of solar radiation energy in modern energy-saving architectural and construction solutions and other research areas.
The SOLINA 2006 Conference was organized in May 2006, the SOLINA 2008 Conference was organized in May 2008 and the SOLINA 2010 Conference was organized in May 2010. The SOLINA 2012 Conference was held at the turn of May and June 2012. In June 2014, the SOLINA 2014 Conference was organized in June 2014, and in June 2016, the SOLINA 2016 Conference was held. In June 2018 Department of Building Engineering organized the SOLINA 2018 Conference.
